President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has left Accra for Ethiopia’s capital city of Addis Ababa, where he will be attending the 28th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of the African Union (AU).
The Session will be held on Monday, January 30 – 31 but will be preceded on Sunday by a retreat for heads of state.
It will be held on the theme: “Harnessing the Democratic Dividend through Investment in the Youth”.
President Akufo-Addo is attending the Session for the first time as President of the Republic of Ghana.
He is expected to join other leaders from the continent to elect a new chairperson to replace Chad’s Idriss Déby. Guinea’s Alpha Condé is tipped to succeed Déby.
A breakfast meeting will also be held for the African leaders with new UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres.
“The President will return home on Wednesday, February 1,” a statement from the Office of the President said on Saturday.
