Ten bodies have so far been retrieved from a mining pit at Gbane in the Talensi District of the Upper East Region which was flooded following a downpour on May 31.

Rescue operations led by National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) with support from some small scale miners in the area is still underway.

There is suspicion there are still more bodies trapped in the mining pit after over 48 hours of rescue operations.

Some of the bodies are reported to have started decaying.

An undisclosed number of miners were reportedly trapped in several mining pits in the area.  The rain water overflowed the banks of a river and entered the mining pits through uncovered pits.

The incident is said to have happened around 11:00pm on Monday evening and as of Tuesday at 5:00pm, no one was rescued.
