Office of the Special Prosecutor & four other bills receive presidential assent

President Nana Akufo-Addo[/caption] President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has assented to five bills including the much-talked about Office of the Special Prosecutor’s Bill. The bills were given the presidential assent at a brief ceremony at the Flagstaff House in Accra on Tuesday, January 2. Among the bills are those for the three development authorities promised by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) during the 2016 electioneering campaign. These are the Northern Development Authority Bill, the Middle Belt Development Authority Bill and the Coastal Development Authority Bill. The Zongo Development Fund Bill was also assented to. Speaking at the ceremony, President Akufo-Addo underscored the need for a new approach to developing the nation. “It is important that the country understands that the reorganisation of the regions is part and parcel of our approach to the development of our country,” he stated. “We believe in a decentralised approach,” he added. “We want to bring development closer to the people.” The flagship Office of the Special Prosecutor Bill, now law given the assent, is expected to crank up the prosecution of public office holders who would be found to have misappropriated funds.
