Ghana supported Hayatou ousting, Prez reveals

Issa Hayatou (L) was at the helm between 1988 and 2017[/caption] President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has revealed that Ghana supported a regime change at the top echelon of the Confederation of African Football (Caf). He said the staying in office of Issa Hayatou for almost three decades was “a long time”. That is why Ghana supported Dr Ahmad Ahmad during the elections in March, 2017, he hinted. Addressing a delegation from Caf on Wednesday at the Flagstaff House in Accra, President Akufo-Addo congratulated Dr Ahmad Ahmad for his election to the top job and pledged Ghana’s support for his administration. “As you know we supported very clearly your election,” he said. “A 30-year-old regime is a long time.” The Ghana leader said he was thus “very happy” when the Malagasy defeated the Cameroonian, who had once served as FIFA President in acting position. President Akufo-Addo urged the new Caf boss to be grateful to his predecessor “for stepping out”. He said Ghana will continue to lend support to the growth of the game on the continent, mentioning the likes of Anthony Baffoe as current officials of the continent’s governing body of the sport. “We are giving you some of our best materials to help develop the sport.” The Caf president also expressed gratitude to Ghana, mentioning that so far seven experienced personalities from the West African nation currently work at Caf. “We are very, very proud of this effort from this country.” The leadership of Caf is in Ghana for the 26^th Caf Awards on Thursday.
