Ghana Premier League debutants Karela United FC shocked former champions Hearts of Oak by beating them 3-1 at home on Match Day 8 on Wednesday. It was the first time the Phobians travelled to the CAM Park in Aiyinase in the Western Region. The Accra-based side drew first blood after Daniel Kodie hit the back of the net in the 11th minute. Though the Phobian held on to lead into the break, Karela FC came back the stronger of the two in the second half. William Opoku Mensah grabbed a hat-trick in a spate of 20 minutes to break Hearts, who were without coach Henry Wellington due to ill-health. In other results, league leaders Ashanti Gold SC were held to a 1-1 draw by West African Football Academy (WAFA) in Sogakope, cutting the lead of the Miners. Asante Kotoko were also held at home to a 1-1 draw by fellow former champions Berekum Chelsea. Latifu Salifu scored first for the visitors before Federick Boateng drew parity for the Porcupine Warriors. The match between Elmina Sharks and Medeama SC was called off after the center referee was assaulted.
