Countries participating in the maiden edition of the Hockey Africa Cup for Club Champions enjoyed the national anthem of Ghana together under a “unification flag” during the opening ceremony at the Thoedosia Okoh Hockey Complex in Accra. The President of the Ghana Hockey Federation, Richard Akpokavie, in his welcoming speech, wished participants an enjoyable stay in Ghana. “This year we are hoping we will have a better [tournament] and we hope that you will all enjoy yourselves, find time to visit Ghana apart from playing hockey and may the best team win.” The first match in the men’s category saw Eastern Company from Egypt beat Police Machines from Nigeria 3-1. The first quarter of the match offered few chances to both sides with the defending champions breaking the deadlock through Abutalib Mahmoud. Captain for the Egyptians side said there is no pressure on his team mates to retain their trophy after their first win. “We just want to play hockey and then come to win the cup. We work hard and we wait to see how it goes.” The other games saw Ghana’s duo in the women’s category securing their three points in their first game of the competition.
