Jake Obetsebi-Lamptey, as he was known in politics, died on Palm Sunday, March 20, 2016 in London after a short illness.
The ceremony at NPP’s headquarters preceded one held at the forecourt of the State House to mark the final funeral rites of the former minister of state.
“It is a great loss to the party,” conceded NPP Women’s Organiser, Otiko Afisa Djaba.
“However, he asked us to wear white to celebrate his life and the goal that he would have loved to see [is] the NPP’s Nana Addo becoming president and NPP winning elections with our various parliamentary candidates.”
Chairman of Jake’s funeral committee for the NPP, Stanley Nii Egyir Blankson, a former Mayor of Accra, eulogized Mr Obetsebi-Lamptey, who also served as Greater Accra Chairman of the NPP.
“At a time that the NPP was running down, Jake came up as a national chairman and with his background of advertisement, he was able to lift the party to win two elections.”
He said Jake’s feat informed the early rite at the party’s headoffice before that by the state.
“We all feel that such a person demands more than just to sit at the State House. Hence the need for us to organize this meeting [at NPP’s headquarters] for the soul of Jake to be at rest.”
President John Dramani Mahama was among mourners at the forecourt of the State House for the final funeral rites on Friday.
His tribute read on his behalf by Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts Elizabeth Ofosu Agyare euologised the former Minister of Tourism and Modernisation of the Capital City.
NPP’s Leader Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia – two personalities Jake joined to challenge the 2012 election results at the Supreme Court – Former President Jerry John Rawlings and his wife, Nana Konadu, and several government functionaries were in white at the funeral.
He was survived by his wife, Esther, and two children, Charis and Rachelle.
