EC to take decision on ongoing registration at campuses

University of GhanaThe Electoral Commission, Ghana (EC) is expected to meet on Thursday over registration of students at the various university campuses.

Campuses where centers of the limited voter registration have been mounted are said to have been inundated with potential voters.

The University of Ghana, Legon is said to be the hardest hit with one center being used for the exercise.

Other campuses are said to be without centers at all, a situation the University Students’ Association of Ghana (USAG) says is an attempt to disenfranchise about 100,000 of its members.

But speaking on TV3’s Midday Live on Thursday, May 5, the Greater Accra Region Director of the Commission Kwame Amoah said he has tabled before higher authorities the challenge at the University of Ghana.

According to him, the Commission did not anticipate such a challenge.

Mr Amoah said one center was set up in each electoral area as per its strategy and so the premier university could not be allocated more than one.

He was sure a decision could be taken as soon as close of day on Thursday, May 5.

President of the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) Paa Qwesi Adu, who was on the live news broadcast, called for an extension of the exercise on the various campuses.

He said that is the only way that most students who have turned 18 and above can be registered.
