A bullion driver has been accidentally shot dead by a police officer at Manya Kpongnor in the Odumase Krobo District of the Eastern Region.
Details were sketchy but police later confirmed that Constable Amidu Osman was involved in the incident and he is already assisting investigations.
Constable Osman accidentally shot the driver of a Nissan bullion van with registration number GN 1630-12.
He was returning to Koforidua from Akosombo but on reaching Manya Kpongnor, a suburb of Odumase Krobo, a group of mourners had blocked the road.
In an attempt to open up the road, Constable Osman accidentally shot the driver of the same bullion van he was in in the head. He died instantly.
The driver has been identified as Emmanuel Narteh, 36.
The police have duly informed his family about the death.
“The Police Command is therefore assuring the bereaved family, the injured and the general public that thorough investigations will be done and the outcome published,” a statement issued by the Eastern Regional Police Command said.
The body of Emmanuel Narteh has since been deposited at the Atua Government Hospital for preservation and autopsy.
The police have expressed condolences to the bereaved family over the inadvertent action by Constable Osman, who is with the Regional Patrol Department, Koforidua.
The bullion van has been impounded as well.
