Office of Special prosecutor to be set up by July 2017– Gov’t

Nana Akufo-Addo is Ghana’s President[/caption] Government’s promise of setting up an office dedicated to dealing with issues of corruption and judgment debt would come to fruition from July 2017. In view of this, government is to lay the bill on that creation of the office before parliament when it reconvenes from Tuesday May 30, 2017 for the processes to commence. Speaking about the president’s commitment to fighting corruption and riding the country of corruption, presidential spokesperson, Eugene Arhin said “we expect that in this next session of parliament the bill will be laid and passed and God willing, from the second part of this year, that is from July 2017, the office of the Special Prosecutor would start working and all cases with regards to acts of corruption of acts of malfeasance would be put before the person selected to be the special prosecutor.” Many Civil Society Organisations and anti-corruption institutions have endorsed President Akufo Addo’s decision of setting up an independent institution which would focus solely on dealing with corruption and judgment debt cases. The promise was made during the 2016 elections and laying the bill before parliament would be one of the first major steps taken by government with regard to setting up the office.
