President Nana Addo Dankwah Akufo-Addo has sent a strong indication of his determination to deal with perpetrators of crime across the country in light of recent crime reports in the country.
Speaking at the 61st Independence Anniversary Parade at the Black Star Square on Tuesday, President Akufo-Addo said the police will be well equipped to clamp down on criminal activities across the country to ensure the safety of Ghanaians.
“I want to make this clear: no miscreant will have the space to terrorize citizens and generate a sense of insecurity in our country. The police have the primary responsibility of maintaining peace and keeping law and order in our society, and, in exceptional cases, with the backing of the armed forces.”
President Akufo-Addo reiterated his resolve to faithfully discharge his obligation of ensuring that peace prevails in the country.
“The first obligation on any government is to ensure the safety of the citizens. As your president, this is an obligation I accept, and I am determined to discharge faithfully.”
According to President Akufo-Addo, the security and peace of the country is crucial towards the prosperity of Ghana.
“My dear fellow Ghanaians, all these plans and big dreams I have outlined will come to naught if we do not have peace in our country. The primary requirement for prosperity is peace.”
President Akufo-Addo also condemned the spate of armed robbery in the country over the past few months.
“The recent spate of armed robbery incidents is totally unacceptable. I will work to ensure that citizens are able to go about their daily duties in the confidence that they are safe.”
There has been a rise in armed robbery cases across the country over the past few months with people losing huge sums of money, property and lives in some cases.
The Akufo-Addo-led government has also seen upsurge in violent vigilante activities as they take the law into their hands to destroy state property and assault state officials.
But the president assured: “The government is doing, and will do whatever it takes to enable the police discharge their duties effectively. We are providing the means for them to modernize their equipment and learn modern methods of policing, and the numbers will be rapidly increased to match our growing population, and sophistication and audacity of the criminals.”
President Akufo-Addo also urged the citizenry to help and support the security agencies to maintain peace in the country.
