President Nana Akufo-Addo[/caption] President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has stated in clear terms that Ghana would never allow the United States of America to establish a military base on its land. Addressing Ghanaians Thursday evening on the US military cooperation agreement that was ratified by Ghana’s Parliament on March 23, 2018, the president also rejected claims by his political opponents that he is selling the sovereignty of the nation. He considered the sovereignty comment, which has been hyped mainly by functionaries of the opposition National Democratic Congress as defamatory, something that has incurred his outrage. No Request from US President Akufo-Addo stressed: “So let me state with the clearest affirmation that Ghana has not offered a military base, and would not offer a military base to the United States of America. “Indeed the united States of America has not made any request for such consideration. in consistent with our established foreign policy we will not consider any such request considering the reality of our circumstance and challenges to peace in our region, we deem it prudent to continue with the agreement with the USA.” [caption id="attachment_79209" align="aligncenter" width="620"] File picture[/caption] Outrage President Akufo-Addo told Ghanaians his government has a firm belief that the agreement will help enhance Ghana’s defence capability, and offer an important layer of support in the common effort to protect the peace in our region. “Fellow Ghanaians, let me conclude by saying how outraged I am by the defamatory comments from my political opponents, some of whose patriotism can be so easily questioned, that the sovereignty of this country has been sold by my government and myself. I will never be the President that will compromise or sell the sovereignty of our country.”

The US Embassy in Ghana has categorically stated that the United States of America has no intention to establish a military base as was speculated.
