With only two days to the expiration of the deadline given to some traders and artisans around the Nima residence of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, a middle aged woman has surfaced, claiming ownership of the parcel of land being occupied by the evictees. A fuming Ms. Veronica Awuah stormed the property on Monday, March 12 claiming the land belongs to her late grandmother, Adelaide Otwiwa Newman, and demanding details on the eviction of the occupants, especially contracts signed. Though she said the land was 19 years ago leased to a private developer for a period of 50 years, she still has a vested interest in it and accordingly ought to have been consulted in the decision by the national security to take over the said property. National Security officials have given the traders and artisans up to March 15 to vacate the area which has been declared a security zone following the election of Nana Akufo-Addo as the President of Ghana in December 2017. In line with that, the affected traders and artisans have begun receiving cash compensation of between GHC3,000 and GHC6,000, but they told Onua FM Friday that the amount is not enough. Ms. Awuah accused the developer of conniving with officials from Flagstaff to forcibly takeover the land without informing the owners of the said property. She explained that though the family is not against the eviction of the occupants, they are demanding full disclosure of any deal that has been reached between the developer and Flagstaff House over the land.
