The Aviation Ministry has begun talks with traditional leaders in the Western and Central regions over the construction of an airport. Two separate sites in the two regions have been identified as being suitable for the construction of the airport. Sector Minister, Cecilia Dapaah and engineers from the ministry have already visited the sites. The site spans the Komenda Edina Eguafo Abirem Municipality in the Central Region and Fawomanye in the Shama District of the Western Region “We came here to look at the land for the construction of an airport between the Central region and the Western region. We brought in the technical people to advise us as to the suitability of the land. As you are aware, we were here last year to look at the land close to Princess town it wasn’t suitable because of the swampy nature of it but this one is very suitable,” Ms. Dapaah said. She said the technical team at the Ministry would visit the site again to take the dimensions, and establish the wind direction among other things “to know exactly what we can use the land for vis-à-vis the project. “We have various components and we were looking at the tarmac to begin with and then we will look for funding to execute the project,” she stated. Ms. Dapaah told TV3 news discussions with traditional leaders, land owners and other stakeholders were fruitful, indicating they have expressed their prepraredness to grant the government the landsize needed for the project. “The chiefs are prepared to give us whichever acreage we want so we are looking at five kilometers [at] both sides. You know it is between western region and central region” she said. Though she admitted the processes will be a long one, she said they would work to shorten it because “the president is in a hurry and we are also in a hurry to fulfill his vision” The acting President of the Shama Traditional Council and Chief of Yabiw, Nana Kwamina Wiennu II praised the government for the decision to bring the airport to the traditional area as it will create jobs for his subjects. He, however, pleaded with the ministry to ensure the project becomes a reality. Western Region Minister Dr. Kweku Afriyie pledged to ensure there are no problems with the land.
