Assemblyman, 4 others fined for open defecation

Assembly Member, Samuel Cleran in white top[/caption] The Komenda Edina Eguafo-Abrem (KEEA) Municipal Assembly in the Central Region has fined five persons, including an Assembly Member, for an open defecation at beach. The five were not taken to court for prosecution but were fined GHS450.00 each by the Municipal Assembly. The Assembly Member for Sibir Seemed Electoral Area, Samuel Cleran and the four were arrested by a task-force set up to enforce sanitation by-laws in the municipality on January 18, 2018. The Environmental Science Officer for KEEA, Alex Damptey had told the media that the five were be put before court but the assembly decided to implement its bye-laws. Onua FM’s Central Regional correspondent Kwame Kakraba reports that the Assembly met and upon consultations, it decided to use the bye-laws instead of the courts. According to the bye-laws of the Assembly, persons who engage in open defecation are fined GHS450.00. Kwame Kakraba said the five have therefore paid the amount. Ghana failing to provide decent toilets In November 2017, the UNICEF District League Table report indicated that, only eight of Ghana’s 216 districts had at least a one-third [33 percent] of their communities not engaged in open defecation.
