Five year old Augustina Bonsu has been suffering from bilateral cataract, a condition that easily leads to blindness, since she was born. Augustina, who is currently in Kindergarten 2 at Adom Baptist Development Centre, has been performing below expectation academically due to her poor sight. The condition of Augustina was detected during an eye screening exercise organized by Filial Heart Foundation at Behenase in the Atwima Kwanwoma district of Ashanti region. She was to undergo a correctional surgery to better her sight in January 2018 but her mother, Akua Akyanaa, could not afford the cost. Founder of Filial Heart Foundation, Dr Ernest Puni Kwarko, decided to sponsor the cost of the surgery to give little Augustina hope for a bright future. “Augustina Bonsu has not been doing well in school not because she is daft but because of her poor sight. We have decided to do a correctional surgery for her to optimize her potentials”, Dr Kwarko indicated. On Tuesday, February 27, 2018, Augustina underwent a successful surgery at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital Eye Centre.
