The National Democratic Congress (NDC) says the Electoral Commission Chairperson nominee, Mrs Jean Mensa, is “unfit” for the post and it will soon expose her weaknesses.
A statement from the party, few hours after her nomination on Monday, July 23, alleged the nominee has some cobwebs in her closest which do not make her fit for the job.
“The NDC would in due course provide further and better particulars of the open and covert activities of Jean Mensa which makes her unfit to occupy the high position of Chairperson of the Electoral Commission of the Republic of Ghana”, the NDC said.
Mrs Jean Mensa, who is the Executive Director of the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA), was Monday, July 23, nominated by President Akufo-Addo, as the new EC Chairperson to replace Mrs. Charlotte Osei who was removed on Thursday, June 28.
But the NDC says it is shocked and disappointed in the President’s choice.
“The National Democratic Congress received the news about the appointment of Mrs Jean Mensa as a Chairperson of the Electoral Commission by H E The President with shock and disbelief”, a statement dated July 23 reads.
The party explains that its shock stems from earlier assurance from President Nana Akufo-Addo that he would do a broader consultation to get a person of integrity to Chair the EC but it does not find such quality in Mrs. Jean Mensa.
“We are shocked because until this appointment the president had given assurance to the nation that the persons to be appointed into the Commission would be persons whose integrity and political neutrality would be above board “
According to the NDC, Mrs Jean Mensa is a “pro NPP and on-avowed anti NDC person” and her appointment to organize an election, which has largely been a two-horse race between NDC and NPP “defies all senses of decency, fairness and justice and amounts to a gross abuse of the discretionary powers”.
