The Ghana Tourism Development Company (GTDC), the tourism investment wing of the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, has launched the Centre of the World Invitational Tournament at the Tema Country Golf Park in the Greater Accra Region.
The Tournament, which will take place at the Tema Country Golf Park on Saturday, May 12, will bring together golfers from all major golf clubs in the country to play at the park, which has the Greenwich Meridian line.
The launch follows several years of the country priding itself as the centre of the world by virtue of its geographical location.
Speaking at the launch, the CEO of the Ghana Tourism Development Company, Kwadwo Odame Antwi, said the primary objective of the Centre of the World Project is to project Ghana as the true centre of the world.
He said the Centre of the World initiative would contribute to the development of the tourism centre by strengthening promotion, infrastructure, information technology and efficient service delivery.
“The Centre of the World Project definitely can be the foot in the wheel to accessing the full benefits of developmental projects and advancement anticipated for the tourism industry,” he said.
Mr Odame Antwi used the occasion to pay a glowing tribute to some Ghanaians and institutions, including Mr. Paul Azonkwo, Mr Paul Ansah, Ghana Ports and Harbours, and the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture for their roles in the Centre of the world campaign. He said the four major projects that would make up the Centre of the World project were the Iconic World Time Tower; the redevelopment of the Greenwich Meridian Line and Religious Tourism Facilities as well as the construction of a Passenger and Cruise Ship Terminal at the Port to attract cruise ships.
The CEO also gave an assurance that the GTDC would transform the Tema Country Golf Park into a world class leisure resort with the capacity to host approved tournaments.
That, he explained, the organisation would achieve that with the help of investors.
Naval Lieutenant P. S Okyere from the Ghana Navy took the opportunity to explain to the media what the location of Ghana means in world geography and the unflinching support in making Ghana Centre of the World Project a reality.
The Captain of the Tema Country Golf Club, Joseph Nettey, further pledged the commitment of the club to the GTDC to help develop the park.
The Business Development and Marketing Manager of State Insurance Company (SIC-GH), Bernice Boachie, and the Director of Marketing and Communications at the Universal Merchant Bank, Ms Yvonne Botchey, expressed hope as the sponsors of the event that the tournament would inspire interest among many Ghanaians of the country’s unique location with regards to tourism.
Other major partners of the tournament are the Universal Merchant Bank, State Insurance Company, the Ghana Free Zones Authority, the Ghana Navy, and the Ghana Ports and Harbours.
