NHIS to cover prostate and child cancers

Health Minister Dr. Kwaku Agyeman Manu says the government hopes to find resources for the National Health Insurance Scheme to cover treatment for other forms of cancer, particularly prostate and child cancers. The National Health Insurance Scheme currently covers only breast and cervical cancers. “Prostate and child cancer treatment will be covered by the National Health Insurance Scheme if government plans to put more resources into the NHIS this year materialized” he revealed in Kumasi. Mr. Agyemang Manu explained the move forms part of government’s agenda to fight all forms of cancer diseases across the country as promised in the manifesto of the New Patriotic Party. He said this at the opening of and the Executive Committee inaugural meeting of the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) in Kumasi. The Kumasi City Cancer project under the UICC is aimed at reducing cancer mortality in Ghana as well as Africa. Ghana is the fourth country and Kumasi the first city to pilot the cancer project in Africa. Chief Executive of Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly, Osei Assibey Antwi said the project seeks to add more knowledge to our health professionals in the fight against cancer. “There will be more training for health professionals and more resources will be available for Ghana in the fight against cancer”, he added.
