The John Agyekum Kufuor Foundation has partnered with the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) to provide free dental screening to over 200 inmates of Adom Baptist Children Development Centre at Behenase in the Atwima Kwanwoma district of Ashanti Region. The exercise forms part of the annual humanitarian activities undertaken by Scholars under the Foundation in a bid to make basic social amenities accessible to the less-privileged. A dental surgeon at KATH, Dr Bertha Gyau, said dental cavies and eruption of the teeth condition were detected when most of the children were screened. “Some of the children seem to have deposit around their teeth which when not taken care of can affect the gum and the supporting tissue of the teeth,” she diagnosed. Dr Bertha advised parents to send their wards for dental check-up at least once in a year to prevent any complications. She recommended that brushing of the of the teeth should be done at least twice in a day – early in the morning and before going to bed in the evening. The Resident Mentor for JAK Foundation, Dr Ernest Kwarko, said they reach out to less-privileged in the society especially children every year to instill humanitarian services among beneficiaries of the Kufuor Scholars Programme. “You cannot make good leaders if they are disconnected from the society that they intend to serve. So we do charity every year and let the Scholars see the realities in the communities where their services are needed the most so that they offer them their assistance anytime the need arises.” The JAK Foundation seeks to promote effective leadership as the catalyst for good governance, and socioeconomic development through advocacy, programmatic interventions and strategic partnerships with institutions.
