GMB 2017: Northern Region’s Zeinab gets chiefs’ backing

The Chief of Commerce in Tamale known traditionally as Nyeb Dakpema, Mohammed Alhassan Dawuni, has charged the Northern Region representative of this year’s Ghana Most Beautiful reality show to showcase the beautiful culture and tradition of the people of the Region.

Four kingdoms namely Dagbon, Gonja, Mamprugu, and Nanum with varied cultures and traditions form the paramountcies.

It is against this backdrop that the Chief of Commerce has charged the representative to showcase the cultural beliefs of these kingdoms for national cohesion.

Born Zeinab Mumuni at the seat of the King of Dagbon in Yendi – also known in the traditional parlance as Naya – and with stage name Zeinab, the beauty queen has also been charged to bring the crown of beauty to her home region.

A Level 400 Development Studies student of the University for Development Studies, Zeinab, who aspires to be a teacher, has the Herculean task of winning the crown in the eleventh edition of the show.

The 2009 representative of the Region, Nasara Abdul Rauf, won the pageant to make her the first to win for the region.

Eight years down the lane, the Region is yet to win again, though its representative in the 10th edition, Hiba, was crowned the first runner-up.

Nyeb Dakpema insists the crown should be brought to the Northern Region.

Nyeb Dakpema believes the crown needs to be brought to the northern soil once again after eight years especially when its representative in the immediate past edition was crowned first runner-up.

“Bring home the crown. Use this opportunity to sell the rich culture and tradition of the [Northern] Region as you go into the competition.”

Speaking at a durbar organized at the forecourt of his palace in Tamale, Nyeb Dakpema revealed that the traditional council and the entire region is solidly behind Zeinab. Thus continuous prayers would be offered to ask for victory for her.

The durbar witnessed patronage from her family, friends, and well wishers.

It was a charged atmosphere when the queen arrived dazzling in her traditionally woven batakari on horse as part of the tradition of the region.

Items including cooking utensils as well as local spices such as dawadawa with a live chicken were presented to her by the Chief on behalf of the entire region as a sign of joy and farewell to her as she goes to begin her days in the reality house in Accra.

Zeinab also visited the palaces of the Regent of Dagbon, Kampakuya Naa Yakubu Andani, the Sagnarigu Na Yakubu Abdulai, and the Gukpe-Na Abdulai Alhassan to seek their blessings before she begins her journey to the reality house.
