FIFA U-17 World Cup: Starlets to face African champions in quarters

Saturday’s quarter-final clash will be a repeat of the Gabon 2017 final

Ghana’s Black Starlets will battle it out with African champions Mali for a semi-final place in the ongoing FIFA U-17 World Cup in India.

Ghana booked a place to play in the quarter-final on Wednesday when they saw off the Junior Menas of Niger 2-0 at the DY Patil Sports Stadium in Navi Mumbai.

Captain Eric Ayiah and striker Richard Danso – who is gradually becoming a super-sub for the Starlets – scored in each half for the Ghanaians.

Their goals came in stoppage times of each half.

Ayiah could have, however, increased his goal tally at the tournament to four but for a missed penalty. Incidentally, he scored the opener from the spot.

The all-African quarter-final encounter will be played on Saturday at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium in Guwahati. It will definitely be a repeat of the Libreville final, which the Eaglets won 1-0.

The African champions appear to be on top ahead of the clash, having won all their matches after the Match Day 1 loss to Paraguay.

They booked a place in the last eight with a 5-1 thrashing of Iraq.
