The Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG) has given the government up to January 31and April 30, 2018 to respectively inaugurate the governing council of Colleges of Education and implement their market premium or face their wrath. The Association described as discriminatory the non-enjoyment of market premium by teachers of Colleges of Education. “Tutors in Colleges of Education remain the only category of teachers in the education tertiary fraternity in Ghana who do not enjoy market premium. The College of Education tutor can no longer accept this form of discrimination”, CETAG secretary Prince Obeng-Himah said. The Association is also pressing on the government to constitute governing councils for Colleges of Education by the end of this month. “The Colleges of Education Act 847 sections 5, 6, and 7 exhaustively enumerate the statutory formation and functions of the Council of education. The Council has not been in existence for the past one year”. CETAG claims the absence of Governing Councils is affecting the smooth running of the Colleges of Education across the country. “Colleges of Education are unable to take certain major decisions due to the inability of the government to constitute governing councils. The situation has affected the smooth running of the colleges with the tutor being made worst off. Tutors who have been due for promotion within this period are in a state of limbo because there are no Councils in place to authorize their promotion,” Mr. Obeng-Himah noted. Also, they want the implementation of the market premium of CETAG members to be negotiated and concluded by 30th April, 2018.
