Vice Chairman of the Ghana Private Road Transport Unit (GPRTU) Robert Sarbah has served notice that transport fares would be hiked this year. He says the main determinant has been the increase in prices of spare parts. “We do not increase lorry fares in isolation,” he observed. “We do so in collaboration with the other transport operators like PROTEA before we even go to the Ministry of Transport for confirmation or otherwise.” He said those steps are being taken. Mr Sarbah disclosed these on 3FM on Wednesday. ‘Bone and flesh’ Though there has been widespread perception that spare parts prices have been reduced, the GPRTU Vice Chairman says the situation on the ground proves otherwise. “[The] situation on the ground [and] the increase in spare parts demands that increment in lorry fares is inevitable,” he stressed. He added that drivers need to break even. “We are saying it is about time we also ensure that the transport fares are also increased just to make sure we also break even to put bone and flesh together.” Source: 3news.com|Ghana ]]>
