Justice Emile Short[/caption] Former Commissioner for the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice, Emile Short says the special prosecutor’s position should be advertised for interested persons to apply. Speaking to Winston Amoah, host of Sunrise morning show on 3FM 92.7, the former CHRAJ Boss argued that, in order to make the position independent, people should be allowed to apply. He also said, civil societies should be allowed to submit names of persons they think are competent and independent for a committee to shortlist three of them for the subsequent appointment of one by the president. He recommended that representatives of various recognised professional institutions like the Ghana Bar Association, Christian Council, Trade Union Congress among others should constitute the selection committee “…and then you advertise the position and let interested persons apply or let civil societies submit names of those who they think will be independent minded and have the moral courage to prosecute individuals irrespective of who they are.” He added that, the committee will then interview the applicants, drop a shortlist with recommendations for consideration by the president. He argued that, going through this process will ensure that a competent and independent person would be appointed to occupy the position. He was speaking on how to deal with corruption in the country amidst the president’s desire to make corruption a felony in order to deter public officials from engaging in any corruptible acts.
