Mahama happy

Former President John Dramani Mahama has charged the Black Stars of Ghana to play their hearts out to ensure that they bring back the trophy.

The former president, whipped up national support for the stars in a tweet on Tuesday Jan. 17 saying “the AFCON cup has eluded us for far too long. Let’s support our Black Stars.”

The stars play their first match against the Cranes of Uganda in the ongoing tournament in Gabon. The last time the Black Stars won the trophy was almost 35 years ago and the former president is asking the stars to end the country’s trophy draught by coming home with the cup.

Apathy against Star
Although there is an African nations tournament which is the biggest sporting event on the continent, there seem to be general apathy against the Black Stars following their recent form and seeming interest in money instead of nation pride which comes with playing for the country.

At the last tournament in 2015 however, although there was similar apathy, the performance of the stars attracted enthusiastic fans to rally behind them in the final stages of the tournament.

They managed to get to the finals, a feat many a supporter least expected and based on that national support went high.

They lost out to Ivory Coast in the final on penalties.
